Heavy and constant rains and storms, accompanied by hail in some cases, affected the southern half of Spain: Almeria, Murcia, Alicante, Valencia and the Balearic Islands. Between Wednesday and Thursday, storms moved towards Castellon and Catalonia.
The biggest losses were suffered by the regions of Murcia and Alicante, where the roads were cut off and classes were suspended. The most affected municipalities in Murcia were San Javier and Los Alcazares, where significant floods occurred.
According to Proexport, in the vicinity of the municipality of San Javier, some greenhouses were damaged due to hail and part of the harvest of basil, green zucchini, several hectares of broccoli and romaine lettuce.
In Alicante and Valencia, producers had to stop picking citrus fruits, as wet fruits should not be stored due to the prevention of fungal problems. In other countries, such as Morocco and Italy, production also declined, so it was generally difficult to meet all demand.
Direct speech: “Fortunately, we were able to prevent this situation, and we collected 40% more fruits within 5 days before the storm, which allowed us to continue our sales without interruption,” explains Sergio Siskar of the Valencian company Venser Group from Gandia.
