Beef sales in Britain have fallen to the lowest level since 2016, and new figures from the Department of Agriculture show that beef prices here have now returned on average to 150 euros.
The main fall in prices was for meat of gobies and heifers of poor quality, the crisis with beef in 2019 reduced the profit of producers by an average of 150 euros per day, and in some other categories by 300 euros per day. Farmers' organizations have warned that poor cattle yields since the start of the year have hurt the winterers and threaten the future of the industry.
An analysis by Farming Independent shows that the profitability of finished gobies, heifers and young bulls for the first quarter of 2019 fell by 54.1 million euros, which is an average of more than 4 million euros per week, based on actual productivity in the factories. In addition to problems in the beef sector, reports this week indicate difficulties in selling beef to UK supermarkets because beef supplies are ahead of demand from major consumers.
A report by the Commission on Livestock and Meat (LMC) in Northern Ireland emphasized that retail sales of beef in the UK from the beginning of the year to March 24 decreased by 4.8%, which is equivalent to a decrease in sales in supermarkets by 3575 tons, and in monetary terms by 30 million euros less in retail sales.
