Earlier this week, EastFruit project analysts recorded a drop in onion prices in Ukraine, which came after 2 weeks of price stability. Currently, farmers of the Kherson region ship onions at prices of 5.5-6.5 UAH / kg (0.22-0.25 dollars / kg), while in the last days of last week prices were at the level of 6-7 UAH / kg (0.23-0.27 dollars / kg).
Project experts see three reasons for lowering onion prices. Firstly, this year the area under onion cultivation on the farms of the country has significantly expanded. This has led to a noticeable increase in onion supply in the market.
Secondly, weather conditions, which were favorable for onions, contributed to lowering onion prices. The development of plants in the main production regions is stable. Every day, onion harvesting is increasing more and more, which leads to higher prices.
The third reason for the decline in prices is the suspension of export supplies to Poland. For a long time, Ukrainian products were in stable demand among Polish importers because of the excellent price-quality ratio.
At the beginning of this week, Polish farmers increased their supply of locally grown onions at low prices. Buyers turned their attention to cheaper Polish products to the detriment of the Urkain vegetable.
Experts predict a further fall in prices for onions, which may fall even below the level of last year.
