In America, this month gave green light to genetically modified cotton, which will be used for human consumption. Thus, humanity has received a new source of protein-rich food.
According to producers, the taste of cotton seeds is a bit like salty sticks, so they can help cope with global malnutrition.
The decision of the Food and Drug Administration allows the cultivation of cotton for consumption as food for humans and animals of all kinds.
Texas biotechnologist from A & M AgriLife, Curtie Ratore, said scientists hope the product will be available on the market within the next five years.
“Yes, we are fully aware of the rejection of GMOs in many countries, but I still hope that areas that are desperate for food will adopt this technology,” Rathore added.
Cotton is grown in more than 80 countries and its fibers are used to make textiles and cotton seeds. Now these seeds are used as an addition to the diet of animals such as cattle and sheep.
Usually, cotton seeds are not suitable for human consumption and many animals, because they contain a high level of gossypol, a toxic substance.
The Rathore team used the so-called RNAi, or RNA interference, a technology that “drowns” the gene, effectively removing gossypol from the seeds of cotton. At the same time, gossypol remained at a natural level in the rest of the plant, since it protects it from insects and diseases.
“By adopting this technology, cotton has a dual purpose. It does not require additional efforts on the part of the farmer or the land for cultivation. Thus, this will make cotton growing more sustainable, ”Rathore said.
