Lufa Farms has announced the construction of its fourth commercial rooftop greenhouse, which will soon be completed in Saint Laurent, Montreal. Construction began in September of this year and is expected to be completed by March 2020.
This greenhouse is redesigning its existing industrial roof to further develop Lufa's growing food concept.
Direct speech: “In every greenhouse we adhere to ever-higher standards of sustainable design. Our new farm will be the most energy efficient today and will combine all our knowledge over the past 10 years to grow more vegetables responsibly year-round, ”says Lauren Ratmell, co-founder and director of the greenhouse.
In northern countries, a greenhouse is often attached to houses, using it not only for growing vegetables, but also as a place for recreation.
The greenhouse will be equipped with a double-glazed window and two sets of energy-saving screens to improve thermal insulation, and its integration with the building located below provides additional thermal benefits for both structures. The greenhouse will also collect rainwater for use in a closed irrigation system, and compensate for waste using an on-site composting system.
Lufa Farms will grow eggplants and more than ten unique varieties of tomatoes on this 4th and largest site without the use of synthetic plant protection products. Montreal Lufa Farms will have a larger surface area than their three greenhouses combined.
Direct speech: “This rooftop greenhouse will double our growing capacity and allow us to feed 2% of Montreal with fresh local vegetables. This is an incredible step forward for hyperlocal, sustainable urban agriculture, ”says Mohamed Hage, co-founder and CEO.
