In New Zealand, Farmland Foods is accused of misleading consumers about the origin of some of its pork products under the Fair Trade Act.
Charges were brought forward by the Commerce Commission following an investigation into the labeling on the packaging of products called “Traditional T-bone cooking”. These pork products were sold from October 1, 2015 to September 1, 2018.
Representatives of Consumer watchdog, a nonprofit consumer advocacy organization, argued that the packaging made a false or misleading impression on consumers that the products were made from pork grown in New Zealand, while most of the pork from which the product was made is imported. The case will be heard in the Northern District Court of Palmerston on May 9. In turn, Farmland Foods Managing Director Eddie Davis said that although these allegations may cause some concern, they are not related to the quality or safety of the product.
Farmland Foods is a New Zealand-based family-owned pork production and processing company that produces more than a hundred meat products sold in all major New Zealand supermarkets.
