Farmers of Ukraine hide cases of infection of animals with African swine fever and sell the infected livestock.
This is due to the fact that industrial pork producers received less than 1% of state compensation for disposed individuals as a result of ASF, said Nikolai Babenko, director general of the Center for Improving Efficiency in Animal Husbandry.
Lack of budget funds to compensate for the losses to farmers in case of detection of African swine fever for the pig farmer means bankruptcy. Therefore, cases of ASF began to hide in both households and large agricultural facilities. In fact, there are many cases of ASF infection in different regions of the country, Mykola Babenko said.According to N. Babenko, if the farmer notices the signs of the disease in his pigs, he decides to quickly sell all the cattle. Adult animals go for slaughter, and pigs - for growing in other farms. The non-disclosure of each individual case of African swine fever contributes to the spread of ASF in the country.
Pork producers on an industrial scale remain face to face with the problem. They cannot solve it independently. The issue should attract public attention. This can save pig breeding in Ukraine and save jobs. Currently, the risk of losing one's own pork production is higher than ever, explains Nikolai Babenko.
