The government of Meru County in Kenya has asked farmers to take advantage of the free distribution program for avocado and macadamia seedlings.
Governor Kiraitu Murungi said his administration has already distributed more than 200,000 seedlings since the beginning of this year.
“Farmers should use ongoing rains and free seedlings to grow avocados and macadamia. My administration is working with the national government to provide water to pipelines, irrigation systems, wells, and community water projects, ”he said.
President Uhuru Kenyatta, he added, has provided markets for good quality avocados in China. The governor said his administration is mainly aimed at farmers in regions that suffer from food shortages, in order to expand their financial opportunities through profitable sales of valuable crops.
Kiraita, who was accompanied by Senator Mitika Linturi and Member of Parliament Imenti Katyuri Murungi, said the project for the development of irrigation system Mveru Umoja was nearing completion.
He described the project as “a game-changing game," saying he would support at least 1,000 Kenyan farmers.
