José Graziano da Silva, Director General of the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO), emphasized that in the next two years, the FAO will focus on promoting nutrition-sensitive food systems and agricultural innovation.
“We can no longer only focus on the fight against hunger,” said José Graziano da Silva, “The goal of sustainable development is to eradicate all forms of malnutrition.”
“Throughout the world, there has been a steady increase in overweight and obesity. Although hunger is limited to specific areas, obesity is everywhere. In fact, we are witnessing the globalization of obesity, ”added Graziano da Silva.Graziano da Silva also drew attention to upcoming key events: the food safety conference in late April in Geneva organized by the FAO, World Health Organization (WHO) and the World Trade Organization (WTO); the start of the UN Decade of Family Farming at FAO headquarters in late May; two workshops on healthy nutrition and innovation in agriculture, as well as a meeting of the Parties to the FAO Port State Agreement on Measures (PSMA) in June.
PSMA is the world's first binding international instrument that specifically addresses illegal, unreported and unregulated fishing.
