Although US media previously reported that 20,000 apples were stolen from an orchard in Indiana this week, subsequent reports indicate that at least 50,000 apples were stolen. The cost of stolen apples is estimated at approximately 27,443 euros.
Williams Orchard's John Drummond reported that his apple garden in Hesston, Indiana, was brutally tricked. On some trees, not a single fruit was left.
Apples accounted for about 5% of the total harvest. The gardener says that he recently installed a new fence, but has not yet put locks on it.
Police told members of the press that they already have a suspect in embezzlement of fruit. This is the person who produces and sells apple cider. During a recent visit to the garden, he acted suspiciously and asked when the garden was open and if anyone was living in a farm house.
Robbery overshadowed the opening of the garden, where more than 1,000 people came to Labor Day to pick apples and enjoy socializing, a children's zoo, and cart rides. Food and drinks were also first served in the original barn of the 1870s.
Drummond said he realized his dream of farming when he and his wife Robin bought a garden after the death of third-generation owner Ken Williams in 2018.
