FAO and the Association of Pig Breeders of Ukraine (ACS) have concluded another cooperation agreement. In particular, their work will be aimed at ensuring traceability of pig production and the introduction of safety systems by the industry.
“We want to develop a quality mark and signs of the quality of pig production, which would allow consumers to distinguish quality pork on the market and have an idea of which pork, domestic or imported, is made of food,” said the FAO Investment Department economist, FAO Technical Assistance Project Manager EBRD Dmitry Prikhodko.
According to Oksana Yurchenko, the president of ACS, cooperation with the FAO has been ongoing since 2015. FAO, in partnership with three agricultural universities, helped the State Food and Beverage Service to monitor African swine fever (ASF).3 thousand samples were collected in 24 regions of Ukraine. In addition, equipment was purchased and installed in the laboratories of the State Food and Beverage Service. Work has begun on the implementation of the compartment system.
“FAO’s cooperation with the State Food and Beverage Service and the ACS made it possible to reduce the risks of introducing ASF to such a level that partner banks continue financing the pig industry in Ukraine,” said Dmitry Prikhodko.
