This year, Ukrainian farmers received a low yield of garden strawberries. In particular, in the western regions of the country, the supply of this berry in the markets is 2.5 times less than in 2018.
This situation was due to adverse weather conditions in the spring of this year, when producers [/ url] of Western Ukraine lost 20-50% of the total crop due to late spring frosts.
Frosts at the end of spring almost completely destroyed the strawberry crop in Poland, and in the West of Ukraine led to its partial loss.
Last year, the processing plants of Ukraine were not able to purchase the necessary volumes of strawberries, because due to the warm weather the berry not only ripened very quickly, but also spoiled rapidly.
Taught by bitter experience, processors do not exclude the possibility that this year they will make basic purchases of berries as soon as its first industrial lots arrive. This will be able to keep current prices for strawberries until early June.
Experts do not exclude that in the 3rd decade of June the prices of garden strawberries in Ukraine may be higher than in the previous year. This depends on whether the predictions regarding the loss of berry yield in farms of the western regions of the country, due to adverse weather conditions, are confirmed.
