South Korea has confirmed the existence of a second outbreak of African swine fever (ASF) at a pig farm located in Yonghon, not far from the North Korean border. The first case there was reported earlier this week.
About 4.7 thousand pigs on the farm in Yonghon and on the neighboring farm will be rejected. from where the second case was discovered.
South Korea is the ninth Asian country affected by this disease, which continues to spread in Asia and Europe. The herd of pigs in the country is about 11 million heads, and South Korea already imports about a third of the pork consumed domestically.
Last year, pork consumption per capita was about 27 kg. According to customs, in the first eight months of this year, South Korea imported 374,961 tons of pork, which is 3.6% less compared to 388,772 tons in the same period a year earlier. In 2018, imports of pork from South Korea amounted to more than 570 thousand tons.
Currently, 9 countries in Asia are affected by this disease: China, Vietnam, Mongolia, North Korea, Laos, Cambodia, Myanmar, the Philippines and South Korea.
